MenACE Seminar: Mental Health, Aging and Palliative Care in Prisons

Increasing the response to mental health disorders within prisons and the quality of palliative and end of life care, by enhancing the competences of management and frontline staff.

The national seminar of the MenACE project (Mental Health, Aging and Palliative Care in European Prisons) was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on the 19th of March 2019.

Forty-six participants attended the Seminar, including prison guards, healthcare staff from the Caxias Prison Hospital, and staff working at the psychiatric ward of Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison (attended through video-conferencing).

Francisco Navalho, Deputy Director-General of the Portuguese Prison and Probation Service, made the opening remarks. Then, Jorge Monteiro from the DGRSP presented the project, its objectives, main outputs, and impact at the national level. On behalf of IPS, Susana Reis presented the MenACE training package and its three components (e-learning, classroom-based and train the trainer course). Participants also discussed the piloting activities in the Portuguese context.

The Seminar has been hosted by the Portuguese Prison and Probation Service (DGRSP) and IPS.
